Kitchen Lighting Guide: Layering Light for Islands, Worktops and Dining Areas

Good kitchen lighting makes your kitchen feel like a space you actually want to spend time in. Get it right and your kitchen feels bright, functional and welcoming all at once.

The key to getting it right? Layering your light.

In this article, we cover everything you need to know about layered kitchen lighting, starting with how to approach each area of your kitchen and which types of light.

What Is Layered Kitchen Lighting?

Layered kitchen lighting simply means using more than one type of light in the same space. Instead of relying on a single ceiling light to do everything, you combine different light sources that each have a specific job.

There are three main layers:

  • Ambient lighting: the general, all-over light that fills the room
  • Task lighting: focused light for areas where you need to see clearly, like worktops and hobs
  • Accent or decorative lighting: light that adds personality and style, such as pendants over an island

When these three layers work together, your kitchen can go from a practical space for cooking to a softer, more atmospheric room for dining or entertaining.

For more on the different styles available, read our article on different styles of kitchen lighting.

Layer One: Ambient Lighting in the Kitchen

Ambient lighting in the kitchen is your base layer. It is the light that covers the whole room and makes it usable.

The most popular choice for ambient kitchen lighting is recessed LED downlights. They sit flush with the ceiling, give out a clean spread of light and work with almost any kitchen style.

What you need to consider about ambient lighting in kitchens:

  • Position downlights evenly across the ceiling so the light is consistent throughout the room.
  • Avoid placing them directly above cabinets only, as you want coverage across the whole floor space too
  • Choose a colour temperature between 3,000K and 4,000K for kitchens, as this gives a bright but not harsh light that is good for cooking and everyday use.
  • Dimmable downlights are a smart choice, as you can turn them on when you’re cooking and dial them back for a more relaxed atmosphere in the evening.

Layer Two: Task Lighting in the Kitchen

Task lighting in the kitchen is all about practicality. It puts light exactly where you need it most, whether it’s on your worktops, over the hob and anywhere else you are doing detailed work.

Under-Cabinet Lighting for Worktops

Under-cabinet lighting is one of the best forms of task lighting in the kitchen. It sits beneath your wall units and shines directly onto the worktop surface below, cutting out the shadows that overhead lights can cast when you are standing in your own way.

Why under-cabinet lighting works so well in kitchens:

  • It puts direct light onto the surface where you are chopping, mixing or preparing food.
  • It removes the shadow problem that downlights alone can create.
  • LED strips are slim, discreet and blend into any kitchen style.
  • LED options are energy efficient and long-lasting

Our LED lighting collection includes options that are perfect for under-cabinet installation.

Spot Bars and Track Lighting for Worktops

If you have an open kitchen or limited wall units, adjustable spot bars are another great way to get focused task lighting onto your worktops. They can be angled to hit exactly the right spot and come in a range of finishes to suit your kitchen design.

Layer Three: Lighting Your Kitchen Island

The kitchen island is often the focal point of the whole room. It is where people gather, where food gets prepared and where your kitchen lighting design needs to make a statement.

Pendant lights are the go-to choice for kitchen island lighting. They hang down at eye-catching heights; they add personality, and they are practical.

How Many Pendants Over a Kitchen Island?

The amount of pendant lights you need over a kitchen island depends on the size of your island, but here are some good general rules:

  • Two or three smaller pendants spaced evenly work well for most standard islands.
  • One longer linear pendant or bar light works brilliantly on a longer island and gives a more modern, streamlined look.
  • Leave enough clearance beneath the fitting so it does not obstruct the view or create glare.

What to look for in island pendants:

  • Consider the scale, as an oversized pendant can be a real feature, but it needs the ceiling height to match.
  • Think about the style of your kitchen and choose a finish that complements it (antique brass for a warmer and more traditional feel, whereas black or chrome is best for something more contemporary).
  • Dimmable pendants give you much more flexibility for different times of day.

Take a look at our pendant lighting collection and our kitchen lighting page for a wide range of island-ready options.

Lighting Your Kitchen Dining Area

If your kitchen includes a dining table, it needs its own lighting moment. The dining area is a different zone to the cooking area, as it is where you sit down, relax and enjoy a meal, and the lighting should reflect that.

An oversized single pendant above the dining table is a classic kitchen lighting idea because it draws the eye and creates an atmosphere perfect for eating.

Tips for dining area lighting in the kitchen:

  • Use a pendant or chandelier that sits roughly 70–80 cm above the table surface
  • Choose something with a warm light output (around 2,700K to 3,000K) to create a more relaxed, cosy feel at the table.
  • Make it dimmable so you can shift the atmosphere for dinner parties or family meals.
  • The fitting does not need to be the most powerful light in the room, as this is where decorative design matters as much as light output.

How to Create Zones With Kitchen Lighting Design

One of the best things about layered kitchen lighting design is that it lets you create distinct zones within one open space. This is especially useful in open-plan kitchens where the cooking area, island and dining area all flow into each other.

Here is a simple way to think about it:

  • Cooking zone: bright and focused task lighting from downlights and under-cabinet strips.
  • Island zone: pendant lights that define the space and add visual interest.
  • Dining zone: a softer and warmer pendant or chandelier that creates a more relaxed atmosphere

Dimmers are essential to making this work properly. With dimmers on each circuit, you can set the right mood for cooking, then shift the atmosphere entirely for an evening meal without changing a single fitting.
